Food security is a key priority for the Asia-Pacific region. APEC ministers and senior representatives from 21 economies are using technological innovation, including artificial intelligence (AI), to strengthen the food supply chain. This includes farm production, rural development, and food distribution.
Natural disasters and extreme weather are creating major challenges for food production. The Asia-Pacific accounts for 47 percent of global disaster-related agricultural losses. These events can damage harvests, change soil conditions, and affect farmers’ ability to grow their usual crops.
Data and AI can help farmers predict risks and adapt to changing conditions. These tools can also improve the management of water, soil, and forests. This can help farmers produce more food with fewer resources and lower emissions. Trade technologies can also improve biosecurity, customs, cold-chain logistics, and food traceability.
Reducing food loss and waste is another priority. Better education, data monitoring, and AI can help reduce waste from production to consumption. This can also make food more affordable and accessible.
Farmers and rural communities remain central to agricultural modernization. Locally adapted technologies can increase farmers’ incomes, create rural employment, and improve the competitiveness of small producers. Stronger investment and financing are also needed for rural infrastructure, public services, and digital resources.
Closer cooperation between researchers, farmers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers can help bring science and technology into every part of the food supply chain. This cooperation can strengthen food security and help the region prepare for future disruptions.
