Rising electricity demand puts growing pressure on power systems, costs, and supply chains across the Asia-Pacific region. Driven by electrification, expanding transport networks, and data centers, regional electricity consumption could nearly double by 2060. The rapid growth of artificial intelligence is further accelerating energy needs, as AI training facilities require significantly more electricity than average global demand growth.
To balance rising demand with system reliability, energy ministers focus on technological solutions and infrastructure protection. While artificial intelligence increases power usage, it also helps forecast demand, optimize grid management, and improve power distribution. Ensuring long-term energy security requires diversifying supply chains, securing critical infrastructure such as submarine cables, and improving energy efficiency across both the digital and power sectors.
Expanding energy access and maintaining affordability remain vital for regional development. Developing off-grid and mini-grid systems helps bring reliable power to remote communities without expanding main power lines. At the same time, financing options for energy-efficient appliances and transparent pricing models help protect consumers from rising costs, supporting regional goals to expand renewable energy use and reduce overall energy intensity.
